Whiteville Women's League Grant

Whiteville Women’s League recently selected the “IT’S ELECTRIC...EBOOKS AT EDGEWOOD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL” grant proposal! The $5000 grant was awarded to Edgewood’s principal, Jared Worthington and media coordinator, Kathy Blake.

The grant will be used to expand the school’s eBook collection, which was started last year with a small matching grant from a reputable publisher. This year the publisher has given the school a matching grant of $5000 to be used for eBooks. This will bring the total amount awarded for this project to $10,000 for the current school year!

Edgewood Elementary School has Ipads in place for every student. The Ipads are used in every curricular area including math, language arts, music and physical education. In order to utilize the Ipads for reading, the EES media center decided to begin an eBook collection. Students really love the eBooks because they are available 24/7 at home and at school; eBooks feature natural-voice audio to model pronunciation and fluency with text-to-speech highlighting for learning students can see and hear; many interactive titles will be available with content that spans the curriculum!

Teachers can also use the eBooks on their Smart boards for whole group instruction or for enrichment. EBooks can be also be used for remediation for students with special reading needs.

We would like to thank the Whiteville Women’s League for their support of this great program!! EES can’t wait to get this program started!

EDGEWOOD ELEMENTARY STUDENTS JUMP FOR THEIR HEARTS AND HELP SAVE LIVES

Students at Edgewood Elementary School in Whiteville are jumping at the chance to fight heart disease and stroke, our nation’s No. 1 and No. 4 killers. On February 12th Edgewood will host its 22nd  annual Jump Rope For Heart event to raise money for the American Heart Association, which funds lifesaving heart and stroke research and community and educational programs for our youth.

Jump Rope For Heart teaches students how physical fitness benefits the heart and shows them that volunteering can be a fun and positive experience for the whole community. The need to educate children about the importance of physical activity couldn’t be timelier. According to recent studies, about one-third of children ages 2 to 19 are overweight and obese.

By including physical activity into their daily routines, kids can significantly reduce the onset and burden of heart disease, By raising money through Jump Rope For Heart, we are preventing heart disease and obesity for the next generation of Americans. Kids are literally jumping into a heart healthier life while becoming passionate about raising money for other kids with sick hearts.

For 36 years, millions of students have jumped rope and learned about heart health and how nutrition and physical activity can help prevent heart disease and stroke. Jump Rope For Heart is co-sponsored by the American Heart Association and SHAPE America-Society of Health and Physical Educators.

Please help our students help others by making a donation. If you would like to help more, call your nearest American Heart Association office at (local phone #) or call 1-800-AHA-USA1 (1-800-242-8721). You can also visit us online at heart.org/jump.
